GUWAHATI: Following persistent attacks from Congress, a top level meeting of the BJP leaders of Assam in presence of party president Amit Shah in New Delhi has decided not to delink Assam from Indo-Bangladesh land boundary agreement.

A senior MP from Assam who does not want to be quoted told ET the party would move the government to retain Assam in the land boundary agreement. "The meeting was attended by MPs from Assam besides union home minister Rajnath Singh and foreign affairs minister Sushma Swaraj."

Assam chief minister, Tarun Gogoi had gone hammer and tongs against the Narendra Modi-led government for delinking Assam from the land swap deal. Gogoi dashed letter to Modi asking to why he has been kept in the dark.

He accused the centre and alleged that the decision to delink Assam was taken for political gain. ‘I was completely kept in the dark about the decision.”

Assam unit of BJP was unconformable with NDA government move to ratify the Land boundary agreement for this has become an emotive issue in Assam and state is going to polls next year.

BJP in Lok Sabha polls opposed the land boundary agreement and it was an electoral issue. Gogoi said, "BJP is a party of double standards. The agreement was signed when our government was in power keeping the interest of our country. We lost election however we still believe that deal is good for Assam. Modi government has undermined cooperative federalism concept."
