BJP, RSS hail verdict; Congress 'studying differing judgements'

New Delhi: BJP on Tuesday welcomed the SC judgement on same-sex marriage and said the court has upheld the party's viewpoint on the same. BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi, who had argued against the same-sex marriage in the Rajya Sabha, told ET that it is a welcome step.

"Marriage in India means marriage between a biological man and biological woman. Same-sex marriage is neither accepted nor recognised in any un-codified personal law or codified statutory law. This is against the cultural ethos of India," he told ET. "SC has asked the government to form a committee. It is a welcome step that they haven't interfered with the domain of the legislature and it is for the parliament to enact a law."

RSS too welcomed the judgement saying that parliamentary system is capable of taking decisions on it.


"The Supreme Court's decision...is welcome. Our democratic parliamentary system can seriously discuss all issues related to this and take appropriate decisions," Sunil Ambekar, Akhil Bharatiya Prachar Pramukh, RSS, posted on X.

Congress said it was in the process of studying the judgements even as spokesperson Jairam Ramesh stressed that the party firmly believed "in non-discriminatory processes - judicial, social, and political". He posted on 'X': "On the same sex marriage and related issues, we are studying the different and differing judgements delivered in the Supreme Court today and will have a detailed response subsequently. Indian National Congress has always stood with all our citizens to protect their freedom, choices, liberties and rights. We, as a party of inclusion, firmly believe in non discriminatory processes - judicial, social, and political."

AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi was also in agreement with the judgement. "SC has upheld the principle of parliamentary supremacy. It is not up to the courts to decide who gets married under what law," Owaisi posted on X.

Vishwa Hindu Parishad central working president Alok Kumar in a statement said it was satisfied with the Supreme Court judgement.
