NEW DELHI: BJP President Amit Shah is chairing a crucial meeting of UP Core Committee leaders in the Capital today.

Going on at party headquarters, the meeting is attended by senior UP leaders including state in-charge Om Mathur and Laxmikant Vajpayee. BJP leaders say that a decision could be taken on the President of the state unit.

Strategy for UP assembly elections, scheduled for next year in 2017 is also being discussed in the meeting.

For the BJP, UP Assembly elections are far more important than the coming elections in states like Assam, West Bengal, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

UP elects 403 MLAs and sends 80 MPs to Lok Sabha. In 2014 Lok Sabha elections, BJP had won a record 71 seats and now hopes to replicate the results in Assembly elections. These are crucial for the party, and more so for Amit Shah under whose leadership party lost Delhi and Bihar elections.
