CHANDRAPUR (MAHARASHTRA): Maharashtra BJP had received some 2,800 applications so far for its `Mukhyamantri Mitra' initiative, under which citizen volunteers would carry out `social audit' of the functioning of government departments and welfare schemes, a BJP leader said.

State BJP spokesperson Shweta Shalini said here last evening that these volunteers would include retired government servants, police officials, teachers, CAs, doctors, and those with social service background. The person's image in the society would be an important criterion.

"We have already selected around 400 Mukhyamantri Mitras from 10-15 districts. The selected candidates would undergo training in June," Shalini said.

The selected candidates are expected to put in at least 10 hrs per week. Their job would be to visit government offices, schools, hospitals, police stations, PDS (ration) shops, etc., and apprise the concerned officers of the shortcomings, if any, in their day-to-day functioning.

These volunteers would get no honorarium or remuneration, she clarified.
