NEW DELHI: After Shiv Sena's protests against Valentine's Day celebrations, the BJP on Friday joined the moral policing brigade by opposing beauty contests.

On the eve of International Women's Day, the saffron party asked the Indian women to desist from aping the western culture.

"Beauty is gifted by nature and the almighty. How can there be a contest," BJP president Rajnath Singh said at a women's conference here to mark the occasion.

He noted that contest can be of some quality which is developed by one's efforts and not on something which has been gifted by God.

Singh recollected that he had banned beauty contests in Uttar Pradesh when he was the Chief Minister of the state.

The BJP chief expressed concern over the growing craze for the western culture and some women taking to it.
