BJP opposed to setting up of SEZs on agricultural land

Swaraj expressed apprehension that utilisation of productive land for SEZs might result in foodgrain shortage in the country ultimately leading to disruption in food security.

KOLKATA: The BJP is opposed to setting up of special economic zones on agricultural land and only barren land should be used for the purpose, party leader Sushma Swaraj said here on Wednesday.
"It is a declared policy of the BJP that SEZs should not be set up on productive land and only barren land should be used," she said.
The BJP leader arrived here leading a five-member team of party MPs on way to Nandigram where villagers staged violent protests over the move by the Left Front government to set up a SEZ by Indonesia's Salim Group.
Swaraj expressed apprehension that utilisation of productive land for SEZs might result in foodgrain shortage in the country ultimately leading to disruption in food security.
She insisted that there was no ambiguity in her party's stand over the issue and all party leaders spoke on the same line.
