NEW DELHI: Terming the increase in Muslim's share in India's total population as a "dangerous trend", firebrand BJP MP Yogi Adityanath and VHP today batted for uniform civil code and law to check it as they claimed that the higher fertility rate in the minority community will cause a "dangerous demographic imbalance".

"The Census figures have sent out warning signals. Time has come that an effective law to control population be made and uniform civil code implemented to ensure national unity and integrity," Adityanath said in a statement.

He termed the decline in Hindu's share, which has dipped to below 80 per cent of the total population, and rise in Muslim's a "dangerous trend".

VHP joint general secretary Surendra Jain called it "unprecedented and alarming case", claiming such a trend will damage India's identity, existence, culture and secular appeal in the world if not checked.

Speaking to reporters, he demanded corrective measures to deal with it. Pressing for a common population policy, Jain also urged Muslims to adopt family planning.

Though Muslim's share in the population has increased, its growth rate showed a downward trend compared to the previous decade.
