New Delhi: The Lok Sabha functioned smoothly for the first time in the monsoon session on Thursday after the Congress-led opposition MPs chose to boycott proceedings than disrupt it over their demands. Zero hour saw BJP Udaipur MP Arjunlal Meena demanding capital punishment for those accused of beheading a person in his constituency recently.

Raising the issue during zero hour, Meena alleged Pakistan-based Islamic outfits' were behind the beheading of tailor Kanhaiyalal, after he reportedly forwarded some social media posts in support of suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma's comments on the prophet. The killing was the handiwork of Pakistan-controlled Islamic outfits to create communal tension, he alleged, and sought ban on outfits such as Dawat-e-Islami.

Congress MPs, backed by like-minded parties, forced one adjournment at the beginning of the day's sitting, by raising the issue of ED summons to Sonia Gandhi. When the House reassembled, they chose to walkout and boycott the rest of the day's proceedings. Congress MPs later rushed for the street protest at AICC and other places against ED questioning Gandhi. Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh said the opposition wanted Parliament to function and the opposition was ready to debate if the government listed inflation and GST rates as subjects for the first debate on Friday.

SAD Opposes farmers panel
Shiromani Akali Dal MP Harsimrat Kaur alleged in the House that the newly appointed committee to look into farmers issues amounted to a betrayal of farmers of Punjab as the terms of reference ignored their demand for legal guarantee for MSP.
