Former cricketer and BJP MP Kirti Azad joined the Congress on Monday. The three-time MP from Darbhanga in Bihar was earlier slated to join the party on February 15, but the Pulwama terrorist attack led to a rescheduling.

On Monday, Azad met Congress president Rahul Gandhi, and in the afternoon he announced his joining in the presence of senior Congress leaders from Bihar.

Attacking the BJP and the NDA government at the Centre, he said, “I gave my service to the BJP for 26 years but in the last few years I got to see the real faces. I was talking about corruption in DDCA (Delhi & District Cricket Association) but was not heard by anyone in the party. Today is like a ghar wapsi (homecoming) for me in Congress.” His father, Bhagwat Jha Azad, was a senior Congress leader and chief minister of Bihar.
