BJP ministers resign; JD(S) feels the heat
The BJP in Karnataka on Tuesday mounted pressure on ally JD(S) with all its ministers in the coalition government resigning as chief minister HD Kumaraswamy failed to quit.
Deputy chief minister BS Yediyurappa, along with a few ministers belonging to his party, met Mr Kumaraswamy on Tuesday night and handed over the resignation of BJP ministers. Mr Kumaraswamy sought time till October 5, the day JD(S) is slated to hold its political affairs committee meeting to take a decision on power transfer.
The BJP had set Tuesday evening as the deadline for Mr Kumaraswamy to tender his resignation and hand over the letter of support to the governor so that the latter can invite Mr Yediyurappa to form the government.
As per the power-sharing agreement reached between the two parties 20 months ago, Mr Kumaraswamy was supposed to demit office on Tuesday and hand over charge to Mr Yediyurappa. After a three-and-half-hour meeting of BJP legislators this evening, also attended by MPs and state office-bearers, party vice-president Yashwant Sinha announced the decision of the ministers to quit en masse.
“Since we have not heard anything from JD(S) till now, all the ministers, including Mr Yediyurappa, would proceed to the chief minister and hand over the resignations,” Mr Sinha, in charge of BJP affairs in Karnataka, said. Asked if the BJP would wait till October 5 on power transfer issue, Mr Yediyurappa remained non-committal.
