The apprehensions around Aadhaar arise amid the Election Commission's special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, where Aadhaar is not accepted as valid proof of citizenship.
Senior officials from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and UIDAI appeared before the PAC, which is examining the functioning of the Unique Identification Authority of India based on a 2021 CAG report.
The committee, chaired by Congress general secretary KC Venugopal, asked UIDAI to conduct a scientific audit of its central database holding Aadhaar holders' biometric and personal data, amid recurring reports of data breaches. Members also raised concerns over Aadhaar details allegedly surfacing on the dark web.
The panel urged authorities to issue a public circular clarifying Aadhaar requirements and simplify enrolment procedures.
