BJP meet likely today to focus on presidential poll, candidates' names could be discussed

The BJP is yet to announce its presidential candidate. As per sources, the names would be discussed during the meeting and an announcement would be made over the next two days. The last date of nomination is June 29.

New Delhi: The BJP parliamentary board meeting to decide on the presidential candidate is likely to take place on Tuesday evening in Delhi. The parliamentary board is the highest body of the BJP.

The BJP is yet to announce its presidential candidate. As per sources, the names would be discussed during the meeting and an announcement would be made over the next two days. The last date of nomination is June 29.

On Tuesday, PM Modi will visit Mysuru for the Yoga Day celebration on the second day of his Karnataka tour and will return to Delhi by evening. Sources told ET that home minister Amit Shah was also supposed to visit Nasik for the Yoga Day celebration. However, Shah will now be in Delhi.


The seven members comprising the party parliamentary board includes PM Modi, home minister Shah, defence minister Rajnath Singh, road transport minister Nitin Gadkari, party national president JP Nadda, party general secretary (organisation) BL Santosh and Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

Nadda will attend the Yoga Day celebration at Noida stadium on Tuesday, and he will be in Delhi after the programme.

Chouhan has engagements on Yoga Day and is likely to come to Delhi later in the afternoon. Other leaders are also expected to come to Delhi post noon.

The BJP has already formed a 14-member presidential election management committee with union minister Gajendra Shekhawat as the convenor and party general secretaries CT Ravi and Vinod Tawde as co-convenors. The committee held its first meeting on Sunday and the next meeting of the committee will happen on June 22, post the parliamentary board meeting.

The committee has been tasked with managing their state units and alliance partners to ensure a glitch free voting for the party candidate, if needed.
