BJP makes last minute effort to pursue suspended MP

Top leaders of the BJP have started making last minute efforts in pursuading its suspended MP Somabhai Patel to vote against the UPA in trust vote in the Lok Sabha on July 22.

VADODARA: Top leaders of the BJP have started making last minute efforts in pursuading its suspended MP Somabhai Patel to vote against the UPA in trust vote in the Lok Sabha on July 22.

Talking to PTI this evening, Patel said that BJP spoksperson Vijay Malhotra and former party president Venkaiha Naidu have told him to remain with the BJP and topple the government by voting against the UPA during voting.

"After meeting the senior party leader L K Advani late tonight I will take the decision," Patel said.

With the aim of aligning its disgruntled MPs ahead of the July 22 vote of confidence in the Lok Sabha, the BJP has already revoked the suspension of Vallabh Katheria, MP from Rajkot.

Katheria and Patel were suspended for anti-party activities in December 2007 when the assembly elections were on in Gujarat.

This was reportedly done at the behest of the Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who did not like any dissidents within the party against him.

The BJP has 130 MPs in Lok Sabha and with the vote of confidence likely to be a close call, it is not taking chances of any disgruntled MP defying the whip and crossing over party lines.

Patel however said BJP can not issue whip to his as he is suspended from the party and was free to take his own decision.
