KHEDA: BJP was leading by over 6000 votes at the end of fifth round of counting in the Kathlal Assembly by-election, district officials said.

The counting for the elections, which took place on September 13, began today with BJP candidate Kanu Dabhi leading from the first round of counting from his nearest rival Ghelabhai Zala of Congress party.

BJP had secured 21,136 votes, while Congress had got 14,815 votes, which indicates that the BJP was leading by 6,321 votes at the end of fifth round, they said.

Kathlal Assembly seat is considered to be a Congress bastion where BJP has never been able to win since formation of separate Gujarat state.

The elections for the Kathlal Assembly constituency, which were necessitated due to death of sitting Congress MLA Gautam Zala, saw over 62 per cent electorates casting their votes.
