A meeting of senior BJP leaders in Parliament House on Wednesday triggered buzz that the party may soon announce its next Uttar Pradesh unit chief - and possibly even the next national president. Party general secretary (organisation) B L Santosh made a rare appearance in Parliament to meet top leaders.

Santosh first met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Parliament office in the morning. He later held a meeting with Home Minister Amit Shah, which was joined by BJP president J P Nadda. The huddle is significant as it came soon after Santosh's visit to Uttar Pradesh.

Elections for the BJP national president as well as state unit chiefs in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Telangana and a few other states have been pending for a long time. UP unit chief Bhupendra Chaudhary had recently met the Prime Minister and briefed him on the state's political situation following the BJP's setback in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, when its tally fell from 62 to 33 seats.

Nadda has been on extension since 2023, and the party has yet to take a call on his successor. If a decision is not taken by mid-December, the matter will be pushed to mid-January owing to the inauspicious period. The party is keen to settle the matter before Assembly elections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Assam are announced around April 2026.
