As the Congress leads in Meghalaya Assembly election mid trend, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is mulling forging alliance with other political parties.
AGARTALA: Ruling Congress emerged as the single largest party in Meghalaya, winning 21 seats in the 60-member assembly.

Its main challenger, the National People’s Party (NPP), got 19 seats. The BJP opened its accounts with two seats in the Christian majority state.

The Congress has sent senior leaders Kamal Nath, Mukul Wasnik and Ahmed Patel to Shillong to avert a situation like Manipur and Goa where it failed to form a government despite being the largest party. BJP’s national general secretary Ram Madhav said, “In Meghalaya, a divided result is a possibility. We will see that a non-Congress government is formed there.”

The BJP has already despatched its Northeast strategist, Himanta Biswa Sarma, to Meghalaya to explore the possibility of forming a non-Congress government. Founded by former Lok Sabha speaker PA Sangma, the NPP has improved its tally from 2 seats in 2013 to 19 seats now. In Manipur, the NPP is part of the BJP-led coalition while in Nagaland it is a partner of the Naga People’s Front (NPF).

The regional party, Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) won two seats while the United Democratic party (UDP) won six. The UDP and HSPDP have a pre-poll alliance. The NCP won one seat, the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement won one seat and the People’s Democratic Party (PDF) won four seats.

In 2013, the UDP had won eight seats while the HSPDP had got four seats. Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has won both constituencies, Ampati and Songsak, from where he contested. Elections were held for 59 seats as the NCP candidate from Williamnagar, Jonathone N Sangma, was killed in an IED blast in East Garo Hills district on February 18.
