New Delhi: Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has accused the ruling BJP of aiming for "the elimination of the Constitution" besides having captured many institutions of Indian democracy, including the electoral system.

Addressing an event at Hertie School in Berlin, a video of which the Congress released on Tuesday, Gandhi, also said the Opposition is fighting a deeper battle, for an alternative vision for India, in the face of the BJP's plans. "What the BJP is proposing is the elimination of the Constitution, the elimination of the idea of equality between states, the elimination of equality between languages and religions and the elimination of the central core of the Constitution; that every individual should have the same value."

He referred to his earlier allegation about 'vote chori' in the last Haryana and Maharashtra assembly elections as examples of what he alleged about the BJP's intentions and said, "The reason they attack the voting system is that they fundamentally don't believe that every Indian is equal. In their mind, there is no way a Dalit person is the same as an upper caste person. They can't even compute that."

Maintaining that Indian democracy is a global public good, he said, "When I'm talking about the attack on the Indian democratic system, it's actually an attack not just on the Indian democratic system but also an attack on the global democratic system."

Accusing the ruling party of capturing institutions, Gandhi said, "There has been a wholesale capture of our institutional framework. Agencies like the CBI and ED have been weaponised...There is an atmosphere in India where institutions are no longer performing the roles they were meant to play... The BJP, however, views India's institutional framework as its own and uses it as a tool to accumulate political power." He further said that the opposition to the RSS would keep the INDIA bloc allies united.
