BJP Haryana govt in minority as 3 independents withdraw their support

Amid the ongoing Lok Sabha polls, three independent MLAs have withdrawn their support from the Nayab Saini-led BJP government in Haryana, reducing the government to a minority.

The three MLAs - Sombir Sangwan, Randhir Gollen and Dharampal Gonder -said they have decided to support the Congress during the LS elections.

BJP had 40 MLAs and six independents supporting it, bringing its tally to 46 in the 90-member assembly, with effective strength of 88 MLAs. Now, with the withdrawal of these three independent MLAs, it has come down to 43.


The BJP might not need to prove the majority immediately as Saini government won the trust vote in March this year. And a no-confidence motion can be brought only once in six months.

The three MLAs made the announcement in Rohtak in the presence of former Haryana CM Bhupender Singh Hooda and state Congress chief Uday Bhan. Despite breaking ties with the JJP, which has ten MLAs, the newly sworn-in chief minister Saini-led BJP government was in majority as it enjoyed the support of six Independent MLAs, besides the BJP's own 40 MLAs.

After the resignation of former CM Manohar Lal Khattar and MLA Ranjeet Chautala (as both were fielded in Lok Sabha polls), the effective strength of the 90-member Haryana assembly now stands at 88.
