NEW DELHI: With elections to four crucial states round the corner, the BJP on Thursday was the first off the mark in readying for the battle.
The party formally inaugurated its ‘central election management co-ordination committee’ at its national headquarters. The committee, to be headed by BJP vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, will comprise representatives from all the poll-bound states. It has been entrusted with the task of identifying the main political issues in each state, formulating the party’s response to them and devising an effective campaign mechanism.
The committee, which is likely to be converted into a permanent set-up, will also be asked to co-ordinate its activities with similar panels to be set up in each state. “Each state office will be connected with the central office, and will be asked to monitor all election-related developments,” explained Mr Naqvi.
With the 2004 general election fresh in its mind, the party has also decided to change its campaign strategy, relapsing to the door-to-door campaigning, considered so effective in the earlier days. BJP president Rajanth Singh, while unveiling the committee office at the party headquarters at 11, Ashoka Road, here today, exhorted his colleagues to reach out to the people in person.
Mr Singh, who called himself a foot-soldier, told reporters after inaugurating the BJP election control room that workers were required to hold door-to-door campaigning in keeping with the party’s tradition.

The BJP chief also took the opportunity to put to rest speculation about the timing of the announcement of the new team of office-bearers, asserting that it would be done towards the end of the month. Earlier in the day, the BJP chief held a meeting with former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and his predecessor LK Advani.Download
