BJP gains edge in Uttarakhand

The BJP is leading in 32 seats compared to 14 of Congress. Smaller parties were leading in nine seats.

NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took an early lead ahead of Congress in Uttarakhand on Tuesday as counting of votes polled in Assembly elections got underway in the state.

In the hilly state, where the anti-incumbency factor is strong, the ruling Congress and BJP were locked in a neck-and-neck race initially. However, with initial leads being established within an hour after counting started at 8 am, the trends began to change.

The BJP is leading in 32 seats compared to 14 of Congress. Smaller parties were leading in nine other seats.

The state has 70 Assembly seats. Polling to Bajpur Assembly seat was countermanded after Congress candidate Janak Raj Sharma died.
