BJP for review of nuclear power projects

The Fukushima disaster, led BJP review country's total civil nuclear energy programme including the proposed Jaitapur project.

NEW DELHI: Concerned over the Fukushima disaster, BJP today joined other opposition parties in seeking a review of the country's total civil nuclear energy programme including the proposed Jaitapur project in Maharashtra.

"There should be a review of the total civil nuclear energy programme and till such time there should be a halt to all ongoing projects," Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj said in the Lok Sabha.

She said this while associating with Shiv Sena's demand for scrapping of the Jaitapur nuclear power project in the Konkan region of Maharashtra.

Raising the issue, Shiv Sena leader Anant Geete said people from Jaitapur area have come to Delhi to protest against the project.

He alleged that the project would be a disaster for the Konkan region including from the angle of security.

He said the world over, including Japan, a review was being conducted on the issue of civil nuclear energy in the wake of the disaster caused at the Fukushima plant following a Tsunami.

Basudeb Acharia (CPI-M) also made a strong plea for scrapping the Jaitapur project.

Several Shiv Sena members stormed the well carrying placards seeking scrapping of the project. Geete later led a noisy walkout of Shiv Sena members from the House.
