BJP fields stalwarts in J&K

NEW DELHI: The BJP on Friday decided to field its three prominent leaders of Jammu and Kashmir former Union minister Chaman Lal Gupta, state union chief Ashok Khajuria and his predecessor Nirmal Singh from the three segments falling in Jammu city, in an attempt to mark a heavy-duty presence in the region.

It also named Ms Shilp Verma, wife of Kuldeep Verma, whose suicide sparked the over two-month agitation for handing over land to the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board, as its candidate from Bishnah, adjoining Jammu, in an attempt to cash in on the support for the movement.

The three leaders belong to separate castes, and the BJP is hoping that the Brahmin-Thakur-Vaishya combination would help it strike it big from the 37 seats falling in the Jammu region. While Mr Gupta, who is a Vaishya, has been fielded from Gandhi Nagar, Mr Khajuria, a Brahmin by caste, has been deployed from Jammu (East). Mr Singh, whos a Rajput, has been nominated from Jammu (West).

The partys central election committee, which met here on Friday evening, ended up clearing the names of 43 candidates. The CEC, at its last meeting held on October 23, had approved a list of 10 candidates. With this, the party has endorsed the candidature of 53 candidates in the 87-member assembly.

Its lone representative in the outgoing assembly, Mr Jugal Kishore, has been re-nominated from Nagrota. With Muslims comprising a majority in the state, the party has been forced to field 24 candidates from the community so far.
