BJP fears more misuse of power by Goa Speaker
The BJP today claimed there would be further misuse of the speaker's power by the Congress to retain power in the state.
"We apprehend that the Congress will try to disqualify two more members of the Goa Democratic Alliance, further altering the numbers in the state assembly," BJP spokesman Govind Parvatkar said.
The government of Chief Minister Digamber Kamat is facing turbulent times after its partner Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party withdrew support in the last week of July.
The floor test conducted to prove the government's majority witnessed speaker Pratapsingh Rane barring three MLAs, including two from the MGP and dissident Congress legislator Victoria Fernandes, from voting.
All three MLAs have approached the Supreme Court, which adjourned the case to August 6. The Goa Democratic Alliance, a BJP-led front, has also filed a petition seeking the dismissal of the state government, saying it has been reduced to a minority.
"The speaker is acting in a partisan manner and we can expect him to go totally out of the way to protect the government," Parvatkar said, citing a move by the Congress to file disqualification petition against two more GDA members, Atanasio Monserratte and Anil Salgaoncar.
Monserratte is the lone legislator of the United Goans Democratic Party while Salgaoncar is an independent MLA supporting the GDA.
