BJP dubs Congress as real merchant of death
With elections over for the moment, and a censure from the Election Commission no longer a threat, the BJP on Wednesday decided it was time to take off the gloves.
Responding to Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s justification of her “maut ke saudagar” comment as a “sad truth” in her reply to the election panel, the BJP questioned the Congress party’s moral right to accuse Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi and the BJP as merchants of fear and death.
BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said both the Congress and Left parties had mastered the art of propagating deceit and lies. And that it was ironical that both parties were accusing the BJP of crimes committed by themselves. The party condemned both Mrs Gandhi and Mr Sitaram Yechury for levelling baseless charges.
In a recount of the Congress’ record, BJP referred to the brutal killings, suppression and forced sterilisation programmes during the 1975 Emergency, targeted carnage of Sikhs in 1984, thousands of deaths of minorities in Bhagalpur riots, the Congress’ tacit understanding with Maoists in various states (Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh) for electoral gains. The BJP also brought up hundreds of fake encounters in Punjab to which the CBI has testified in court.
With such a record, the BJP maintained the Congress did not have the moral right to talk about and accuse others of human right violations. The BJP spokesperson said, “The Congress was responsible for the worst kind of politics.” The party claimed the change in stance by the Congress only revealed the “utter confusion in the Congress camp”. The reply to Election Commission is the fifth time that the party has changed its stance on the merchant-of-death remark made by Mrs Gandhi.
On December 3, Mrs Gandhi made the merchant-of-death remark in Navsari in Gujarat. To begin with the Congress claimed that Mrs Gandhi had never made said anything of the sort. Then, Congress explained that it was meant for police and not for Mr Modi. On December 7, after Mr Modi referred to that line to justify his Sohrabuddin speech, Mr Kapil Sibal said Mrs Gandhi’s target was not the Gujarat chief minister but “certain state functionaries”.
Next, the Congress did a volte face and said that the comment was meant for Mr Modi alone. And then in yet another shift, the party clarified that it was for the system and not for Mr Modi. Finally, the reply to the EC, where, the Congress president said the comment was meant for both the system as well as Mr Modi.
The Congress was not the only party to be at the receiving end of BJP’s tough talk. Responding to Mr Yechury’s remark that the BJP was hobnobbing with Maoists and Muslim fundamentalists, the party only sought to highlight the CBI report on Nandigram. The investigating agency reported that CPM cadres continue to harass and beat up witnesses of Nandigram violence. Mr Javadekar said. “this is yet another testimony of the total state complicity in suppressing the truth that needs to be unearthed.”
The BJP demands that the CBI enquiry requires full protection to be provided to the victims of Nandigram. To this end it has suggested the removal of state police from the area, instead the area be put under the complete control of central forces till the CBI enquiry is over. The BJP is of the view that “unless such a step is initiated, the truth will never surface”.
“Despite such a terrible track record, the CPM leader Mr Sitaram Yechury has the audacity to falsely accuse the BJP for hobnobbing with and protecting Maoists....The CPM also stands completely exposed when they surrendered to the Muslim fundamentalists in the case of Taslima similar to the Congress submission before these forces in Shahbano case,” the BJP spokesman said.
