BJP demands Rs 1,000-crore Central relief for Karnataka
BJP has urged Governor Rameshwar Thakur to impress upon the Centre to sanction at least Rs 1,000 crore as financial assistance for taking up relief and rehabilitation measures.
In a memorandum submitted to the governor, a high-level BJP delegation sought immediate steps to be taken to provide assistance to the affected people as the unprecedented rain had led to the death of 25 persons and over 3,500 cattle. Standing crops in at least 5 lakh acres in the coastal, malnad and north Karnataka districts had been damaged and over 25,000 families had been rendered homeless due to the heavy downpour, the delegation said.
Apart from paddy, wheat, jowar, ragi and other crops, horticulture and plantation crops worth hundreds of crores of rupees in Bijapur, Bagalkot, Belgaum, Koppal, Bellary, Kolar and Bangalore rural districts had been destroyed. Even arecanut, coconut, banana and coffee crops were hit by the rains, the BJP delegation said demanding steps to waive the interest dues on the crop loans and also reschedule other term loans.
The BJP delegation, comprising party spokesman and general secretary Suresh Kumar and former minister Ramachandra Gowda, wanted the governor to take steps to repair the damaged infrastructure.
