BJP demands immediate arrest of Geelani
The BJP on Monday demanded immediate arrest of Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani citing the incident of raising slogans by LeT militants at a public meeting of Hurriyat Conference in Srinagar.
LUCKNOW: Charging the UPA government with maintaining silence on the incident of raising slogans by LeT militants at a public meeting of Hurriyat Conference in Srinagar, the BJP on Monday demanded immediate arrest of Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
"The Prime Minister, the Union Home Minister and Sonia Gandhi should explain their silence," senior BJP leader Venkaiya Naidu told reporters here.
"It’s a serious matter and their silence is baffling and is perhaps prompted by their apprehension that they could lose Muslim votes," he said.
Naidu also took serious exception to the formation of a committee to consider withdrawal of army from Kashmir saying that such a demand was "anti-national". The government appears to have buckled under the pressure of its allies, he said.
Any withdrawal of army from Jammu and Kashmir will send a wrong message and adversely affect the morale of the security personnel, he said.
He said the fresh posturing by the terrorist outfits was a result of the government's reported decision to reduce troops in the militancy-infested Jammu and Kashmir and asked the government to review troop reduction in the state in view of this development.
In Jammu, the Janata Party today took out a protest demonstration against yesterday's incident and flayed the state government for its failure to arrest Geelani.
State Janta Dal President, Som Nath Dabgotra said Geelani is not fighting for any cause but for his self interests by tactful and deceitful means.
