BJP, Civil Society Organise Protests
Kolkata: The BJP state leadership has decided to continue its ongoing dharna beyond September 5 in Kolkata demanding the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the rape and murder of a medical student on August 9. The BJP will also organise a protest and gherao the district magistrate's office on Monday. Meanwhile, several demonstrations by civil society, celebrities and the common people were held in Kolkata on Sunday, demanding justice for the deceased student.

Speaking at the dharna on Sunday, BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar said, "Do you think the protest should continue? We will write to the police. But they can see only one colour (the green of Trinamool). If denied permission by the police, we will move the court and seek permission to continue the dharna. It should be continued for another week or even a month."

Majumdar said the people want Mamata Banerjee to step down over the recent death and several other cases of rape and murder across Bengal, which often go unreported. He drew attention to the alleged rape of a minor tribal girl in his constituency of Balurghat.


A 'Maha Michhil' (mega rally) comprising people from different cross sections of society was taken out from College Square in central Kolkata to Esplanade on Sunday. Many celebrities joined the rally a and demanded to know the actual status of the CBI probe into the student's death. During protest, a man in inabrieted condition allegedly physically assaulted a woman protester.
