BJP can’t claim to be a national party: Natarajan

NEW DELHI: The troubles in the NDA provided the Congress yet another opportunity to claim that it was better suited to run a coalition. On Monday, the Congress said that it is now the only national and viable alternative after the NDA meltdown.

The Congress, which attempted to underplay the efforts of leaders like Prakash Karat to cobble together a Third Front, said the political situation was leading to a unipolar polity. Flaunting the airs of a winner, the Congress said its performance in the Lok Sabha elections will be exceptionally good.

Party spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan said that with a trusted and among the oldest ally (BJD) of the NDA walking out, the BJP-led coalition was floundering. In such a situation, the spokesperson said, the alliance that her party leads has emerged as the natural alliance for governance.

Eschewing political niceties, the Congress described the challenge posed at the hustings by regional and smaller parties as limited to pockets. The party reiterated its contention that at the national level, the Congress was the only option. While the party will have to contend with contest from various parties in pockets of the country, we don't have a serious rival at the national level. The NDA has lost all credibility to be called a national party, said Ms Natarajan.

As it gloated over the BJP-led coalition's misfortune, the Congress sought to present its own precarious relationship with the Samajwadi Party as par for course. Tough stance, negotiations and talk in elec-tion time is natural. Every party is entitled to attempt to further their interests... in terms of concrete facts, the Samajwadi Party has not quit the UPA,

Ms Natarajan said. Notwithstanding its own sniping allies - Samajwadi Party, the Nationalist Congress Party, the Lok Janshakti Party - all of whom seemed to be seeking to give the Congress the role of a junior partner, the Congress held that over the last five years it has perfected the art of coalition.
