BJP backs Election Commission, slams opposition over 'baseless' allegations

New Delhi: The BJP on Saturday came out in support of the Election Commission following its press note reaffirming unanimity on decisions concerning the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), while attacking the Congress and other Opposition parties for making what it called baseless allegations against the poll panel.

Senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said it was unfortunate that Opposition parties, particularly the Congress and Rahul Gandhi, had been making baseless and shameful allegations against the EC over the past four to five days.

"This is very unfortunate, which we condemn. They (Congress) even went so far as to say that CEC should be arrested, an FIR should be filed. Today, the Election Commission has officially issued a press note regarding the meeting held today, in which all three-the Chief Election Commissioner and both members-were present together...It states that all the decisions taken regarding SIR were made with the consensus of the CEC and both Election Commissioners," Prasad said.
