Assam: BJP ally Bodoland People's Front joins Congress-led alliance

Snapping its ties with the ruling BJP, the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) formally joined the Congress-led Grand Alliance on Sunday.

BPF chairperson, Hagrama Mohilary, said in Guwahati, “Ousting the BJP, the alliance will secure absolute majority and form the government after the assembly polls. We will not need to borrow MLAs from other parties. We will not see a situation where elected persons are kept secretly in other states or hotels.”

“Assam under BJP rule is in bad shape. People are yearning for a change. There is a need to save Assam. We will oust BJP in this election,” Hagrama said.


He added, “To make the government, we need 64 seats in the 126-member assembly, we will get more than 70 seats. Getting too many seats results in a problem.”

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president, Ripun Bora said, “The Congress Mahajot (grand alliance) has increased its strength as our old friends, the BPF has joined us. Assam’s destiny is about to change for the better. Many tributaries join together to make a strong river and the Congress-led Mahajot gets one more partner, the BPF. The Congress is coming (to power) and we are proud to partner with the BPF.”

Mohilary added, “The people of Assam are struggling with rampant inflation and mass unemployment, along with which, the insensitive BJP government is imposing the anti-people Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) law. The people are so fed up that they are chanting ‘Assam Bachao’ (Save Assam).

Bora said that before March 5, the alliance will finalise seat-sharing. “RJD leader Tejaswi Yadav will campaign for the alliance in the Assam polls.”

The Congress, along with All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), CPI, CPI (M), CPI (ML) and Anchalik Gana Morcha has formed a grand alliance for the Assam polls.
