BJP alleges mutli-crore scam in SSA

HYDERABAD: The BJP on Sunday demanded the resignation of Andhra Pradesh's Primary Education Minister N Rajyalakshmi to own moral responsibility for an alleged multicrore-rupee scam in a primary education scheme.
The state government was involved in many scams and siphoning of funds meant for the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) was the latest, state BJP chief Bandaru Dattatreya alleged here.
He told reporters that the government had allegedly submitted wrong accounts to the Centre about unutilised money allotted for the scheme, a centrally sponsored programme to provide education to poor children in rural areas.
Dattatreya demanded an enquiry by a sitting high court judge into alleged irregularties in the SSA project.
Two persons - V Subrahmanyam, an assistant accounts officer in the SSA project, and Sarasa Devi, a former teacher who runs an advertising agency - were arrested for allegedly siphoning of over Rs 7.40 crore sanctioned under the programme and were sent to judicial custody.
The scandal came to light when the education department's financial controller, during an internal audit, found some employees had allegedly diverted funds sanctioned for schools to prepare teaching aids and improve infrastructure.
