Bird flu fear in Jalpaiguri village

Fear of bird flu is looming over Umacharanpur village in Jalpaiguri district, which has so far remained unaffected by the disease, with 1245 poultry deaths being reported in the last two days.

JALPAIGURI: Fear of bird flu is looming over Umacharanpur village in Jalpaiguri district, which has so far remained unaffected by the disease, with 1245 poultry deaths being reported in the last two days.

Animal Resources Development department sources said another 300 chicken were reported to have died this morning in the village in Falakata area, which has 125 poultry farms on contract with a leading Tamil Nadu-based company.

The authorities were informed of the situation by the panicking villagers and ARD department officials have rushed to the area, ARD deputy director Bidyut Baran Roy said.

Samples from the dead chicken have been sent for testing, he said.

Avian influenza had affected 16 out of the 19 districts in the state and culling operations had been completed.
