Bindra to face South African Patel in race to become ICC CEO

NEW DELHI: Former BCCI president I S Bindra will have to face the challenge of South Africa's Imtiaz Patel in the race to become the Chief Executive Officer of the International Cricket Council.
The term of the present CEO, Australian Malcolm Speed, ends in June and the names of the two shortlisted candidates to succeed him were finalised by an ICC sub-committee, which has BCCI chief Sharad Pawar as one of its members, Cricket Board sources said.
The other members were ICC president Ray Mali, England Cricket Board chairman David Morgan and Cricket Australia chairman Creagh O'Connor.
With Pawar scheduled to become ICC president in 2010, the possible appointment of Bindra to the CEO's post could greatly increase India's influence in the game.
Patel, of Indian origin, heads the Supersport broadcast network in South Africa.
Discussions on Speed's successor will take place in the two-day ICC Executive Board meeting starting tomorrow in Dubai.
The other matters expected to come up in the deliberations include the format of the 2011 World Cup to be co-hosted by India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, as well as issues relating to the Indian Premier League, Indian Cricket League and the proposed Champions Twenty20 international tournament.
Board will also consider the independent forensic audit of Zimbabwe Cricket, carried out by accountancy firm KPMG of South Africa. It is also expected to approve the trialling of more technology in helping umpires' decisions in Test matches.
