Bihar migrants must 'adopt' local culture: CM

KOPARGAON: In a significant climbdown from Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's remarks on Raj Thackeray, a member of his council of ministers ON Wednesday said north Indian migrants to Mumbai must "adopt" the local culture.

"Though Bihar is the `Janmabhoomi' (place of birth) for them, Mumbai is the `Karmabhoomi'. Therefore they must integrate with the locals and adopt the local culture," Bihar's Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ramashray Prasad said here.

An unusually aggressive Nitish Kumar had likened Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief to a 'Shaitan'(devil) for his controversial remarks against North Indians and Chaat festival.

Raj had recently objected to the celebration of Uttar Pradesh Divas and the magnitude of Chhat Puja celebrations in Mumbai and said only Maharashtra Day, and not any other state's day can be celebrated in the state.

Prasad however, maintained that the attacks on north Indian migrants in Maharashtra, the "land of saints", were in "bad taste".

"People from north India and Bihar migrate to Mumbai in search of livelihood due to the poverty and are not interested in politics," Prasad, who was in the town for a visit at the famous Shirdi Sai Baba temple said.
