KOLKATA: BJP's defeat in the Bihar Assembly elections have pleased everybody in Bengal -the CPM, Trinamool Congress and Congress. Only unhappy political party in the state is of course BJP itself.

It is Nitish-Lalu Prasad led grand alliance which has managed to thwart Narendra Modi's victory in the neighbouring state of Bihar.Bengal will go for polls next year. But in Bengal, BJP is not as powerful as it is in Bihar. In last year's Lok Sabha polls, they have won two seats and also won one Assembly by-elections seat later on. This is precisely BJP's success story in Bengal. After the Assembly by-elections, the saffron brigade has failed to gain any electoral victory. Rather, the party's vote share has come down significantly in all elections which took place after 2011 when Mamata Banerjee came to power.

It is now expected that all three important political players -Trinamool, CPM and Congress -will fight against BJP next year. All three had supported Nitish-Lalu Prasad combine in Bihar which trounced Narendra Modi. But Modi's party has not been able to pose before these three parties in Bengal any major threat. Naturally ,success of grand alliance in Bihar may not have any major impact on Bengal polls next year because BJP has lost its political importance which it gained after parliamentary polls with 17% of the total votes polled.

Now Mamata Banerjee rules supreme in Bengal and her party has fared extremely well in all elections which took place in the state after 2011. Siiguri is the only exception where Trinamool fared very poorly in civic and panchayat byelections. In Bengal too, BJP is considered as the common enemy to all the three parties. But will it be possible for these three parties to form a grand alliance? The answer is a big no. Because they know that BJP is not at all a potential threat to them and there is no need for any grand alliance against the saffron brigade.
