Bhopal gas tragedy: Commission seeks info on Warren Anderson's arrest

The Commission probing the Bhopal Gas disaster today sought information from the PMO about Warren Anderson

BHOPAL: The Commission probing the Bhopal Gas disaster today sought information from the PMO and the Union Home Ministry about the arrest and subsequent release of then Union Carbide chairman Warren Anderson.

Chairman of the Commission Justice (Retd) S L Kochhar passed the order to "concerned authorities," an official statement released here said.

The Commission has also sought information about how Anderson was provided with a state aircraft to leave Bhopal for Delhi after his release.

The Commission was constituted following the June 2010 judgement against the Carbide officials awarding them lighter punishments, which created a hue and cry.

US-based Anderson had come to Bhopal after the tragedy and was arrested, to be later released on bail.

The Commission today also recorded the statement of a local resident Nisar Ahmed in the case.

N R Krishnan, the secretary of the former Chief Minister Arjun Singh, was supposed to appear before the Commission today, but he did not come as the notice was not served to him. The Commission directed the authorities to re-send the notice through District Judge, Tis Hazari Court, New Delhi.

It has also summoned advocate Shahnawaz Khan for recording his statement.

Deadly methyl isocyanate gas leaked from the Carbide plant on the intervening night of December 2-3, 1984, killing over 3,000 and injuring thousands of others in the world's worst industrial disaster.
