Bharat Stage implementations will improve ambient air quality: Prakash Javadekar
NEW DELHI: Government today said that the implementation of Bharat Stage (BS)-IV/V/VI norms will improve the ambient air quality as it will reduce the sulphur content in the fuel.

"The universalisation of BS-IV norms will reduce sulphur content of the fuel to 50 ppm and the implementation of BS-V/BS-VI emission norms will further reduce the sulphur content to 10 ppm and will improve the ambient air quality," Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar said in a written reply in Lok Sabha.

Presently, BS-IV norms have been implemented in 63 cities covering 15 states including Delhi and the National Capital Region.

In a reply to another question, Javadekar said that India is ranked fourth in total Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions after China, the United States of America and the European Union.

"World Resources Institute has presented an analysis of the country-wise GHG emissions for the year 2011. According to it, ten top emitters contribute around 70 per cent of the global GHG emissions. India is ranked fourth in total GHG emissions after China, United States of America and European Union," the minister said.

He said that the report acknowledges that India's per capita GHG emissions are only one-third of the global average.
