BENGALURU: Ten roads in Bengaluru’s Central Business District (CBD) will offer technology-enabled paid parking services in about a week.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is introducing the new system in public-private partnership mode.

It is expected to earn Rs 30.5 crore annually from Central Parking Services (CPS), the Bengaluru-based firm that has bagged the contract.

The company has begun installing parking meter booths on MG Road, Church Street, Museum Cross Road, St. Marks Road, Vittal Mallya Road, Kasturba Road, Cunningham Road, Ali Askar Road, Brunton Road, and Main Guard cross-road.

CPS has bagged the contract for introducing on-street paid parking services for 86 roads in the city. The company’s mandate is to create parking space for 4,000 cars and 10,000 two-wheelers, a senior BBMP official said.

The BBMP has divided the city into three zones: A, B and C, and fixed the parking fee based on the zone.

Maximum number of roads fall in zone C.

The contractor will collect from cars an hourly fee of Rs 30 in zone A, Rs 20 in zone B and Rs 15 in zone C. Two wheelers will pay an hourly fee of Rs 15 in zone A, Rs 10 in zone B and Rs 5 in zone C.

CPS, which has implemented technology driven parking solutions in several cities as well as at the Bangalore International airport, will deploy technology to manage parking services.

“We will introduce Internet of Things (IoT) device-based smart parking system with Namma Bengaluru smart parking app, along with parking meters connected to a central command and control centre,” managing director N Sathyanarayanan told ET.

Though the BBMP has made 86 roads available for paid parking in the city, officials said CPS will be able to introduce parking facilities in at least in half of them soon, as most of these are Tender Sure roads with parking bays neatly laid out.

Under the new parking system, a user can park his or her vehicle for an unlimited number of hours unlike on Brigade Road where one cannot park for more than two hours, the BBMP official said.

Shantinagar MLA NA Haris, in whose constituency some of these upscale parking areas falls, hailed the new parking system.

“It is going to bring a lot of discipline and help citizens. At the same time, it will also bring some revenues for BBMP,” he said.
