KOLKATA: West Bengal government is set to claim geographical indication (GI) tag for their famous sweet dishes Sarpuria and Sarbhaja, which they say have originated in the Krishnanagar, an important cultural centre in Nadia district of the state.

The government also want to secure the state’s rights over another famous sweet delicacy ‘Sandesh’ which is made of molasses (called Nalen Gur in Bengali).

Senior officials of the state government said that they are likely to apply for the GI (Geographical Indication) for these delicacies shortly. GI tag is like a brand name granted to a product because of its geographical uniqueness which also indicates the place of origin of a particular product.

Bengal will also claim Muslin clothes as its own. Similarly, the govt wants to claim patent for Ghurni clay dolls from Krishnanagar.
