Bengal to get 19000 crore bailout package from Central government

The Central government has agreed to a Rs 19,000-crore bailout package for West Bengal to accommodate UPA ally Mamata Banerjee.

DELHI/KOLKATA: The Central government has agreed to a Rs 19,000-crore bailout package for West Bengal to accommodate UPA ally Mamata Banerjee. This was decided at a meeting in Delhi between Union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee and Bengal finance minister Amit Mitra on Tuesday.

According to sources, Mukherjee agreed to the bailout package despite Mitra failing to submit a recovery roadmap by augmenting state revenue that is expected from a state committed under the Fiscal Recovery and Budget Management (FRBM) Act.

The main reason for the Centre's decision is that Mamata has inherited a huge burden of the previous Left Front government.
