Bengal land ceiling bill sent to select committee

The Bill was referred to the select committee was not expected to be tabled in the state assembly before March.

KOLKATA: Dealing a blow to Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee's efforts to step up industrialisation in West Bengal, a Bill to remove the rural land ceiling of 25 acres was Monday referred to an all-party select committee of the assembly.
The Land Reforms (Amendment) Bill, 2006, had triggered protests from Left Front partners, RSP and Forward Bloc, alleging 'indiscriminate' conversion of agricultural land for industrial use.
The state government had decided to amend the law for allowing investors in industry, commerce and infrastructure ventures to acquire, hold and transfer land in excess of the rural land ceiling. The Bill came in the backdrop of controversies over acquisition of agricultural land for Tata Motors and the Salim group of Indonesia.
The Bill was referred to the select committee was not expected to be tabled in the state assembly before March.
The Left Front had bowed to pressure from its coalition partners on November 24 to refer it to a select committee.
Land Reforms Minister Abdur Razzak Molla, who is the chairman of the committee to which the bill was referred, said it would submit its report by the last day of the next session of the assembly.
