KOLKATA: The West Bengal government on Wednesday said it would avoid acquisition of agricultural land for industrialisation and infrastructure development, but would go ahead with the Tata Motors small car project, the construction for which will begin this year.
Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee clarified his government's stand at an all-party meeting, which was boycotted by the opposition Trinamool Congress against the "forcible" acquisition of agricultural land and participated in by the Congress and SUCI.
Urging political parties to cooperate with the Left Front government, Bhattacharjee asked them to realise the importance of the Tata Motors' car project at Singur in Hooghly district.
Briefing reporters, Industry minister Nirupam Sen said that the state government explained how it was planning to earmark land for industries and infrastructure development at Singur. "The process has been initiated."
The meeting rejected the demands of the Congress for stalling land acquisition for the time-being and instituting a land commission, Sen said.
Since the unit was being set up in a competitive market and that the Tatas had already set 2008 as the deadline, Sen said, there was no possibility of stalling the process at this hour.
