Bengal governor praises Mamata's government, opens budget session

KOLKATA: West Bengal governor Keshari Nath Tripathi on Friday praised Mamata Banerjee's government while inaugurating the budget session of the state Assembly. Bengal finance minister Amit Mitra will table the budget on February 10.

Tripathi praised the state government for it's effort to solve the post-demonetization crisis in the state. "Farmers, businessmen and even service holders suffered a lot after demonetization and the state government's role is appreciable. Even though there was a problem after demonetization,the state government had carried out the development activities. All schemes taken up by the state government for development of Jangalmahal have been implemented," Tripathi said.

The governor also heaped praise on the state government for returning land to the Singur farmers. "The Supreme Court had given a historic verdict on Singur and the state government has returned land to the farmers there," said the governor.

He also praised the role of the state administration in maintaining peace and communal harmony in the state. The governor said West Bengal was a peace-loving state and the state government had worked well in maintaining peace and communal harmony despite provocations.

Also the governor gave certificate to the chief minister for setting up several development boards for the tribals in Darjeeling. He also announced that Bengal would have two new districts soon and said that Jhargram in south Bengal and Kalimpong in Darjeeling district would soon get status of separate districts.
