Bengal farmer tries to commit suicide

It is not loan but over-production that forced a farmer in West Bengal to make an attempt to commit suicide in Bankura district on Saturday.

BANKURA: It is not loan but over-production that forced a farmer in West Bengal to make an attempt to commit suicide in Bankura district on Saturday.

Police said a farmer took pesticide to end his life as he was not getting proper price for his crop---potato at Bistupur.

His family members, however, could manage to take him to a hospital where he was battling for life, police said.

Over-production of potato reduced its market price forcing many cultivators to sit for distress sale in the area, official sources said but the peasant community was of the opinion that non-availability of cold storages had led to the situation.
