Bengal BJP MP seeks divorce after wife joins Trinamool Congress

Kolkata: Amid an ongoing desertion of leaders from the Trinamool Congress, the wife of BJP MP and West Bengal Yuva Morcha head Saumitra Khan joined the TMC on Monday, alleging disrespect by the saffron party.

Saumitra Khan held a press conference later in the day and said he would send a divorce notice to his wife, Sujata Mondal Khan. Sujata Mondal Khan said she had taken several risks to get her husband elected in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls from Bishnupur, but the BJP never felt the need to provide her any security, or value her work. During the elections, her husband was barred by a court from entering the constituency as a condition for bail in a criminal case.

“Today they are taking in people who have amassed a lot of wealth and giving them respect,” Sujata Mondal Khan said, hinting at Suvendu Adhikari's induction into the BJP.


BJP insiders said her leaving the party would not make any difference. One of them said even Saumitra's journey had not been peaceful in the party. Differences between state BJP chief Dilip Ghosh and the MP are well known, especially after their disagreements over the Yuva Morcha’s new district committees surfaced.
