Being young may not save you from new coronavirus

The most vulnerable
Covid-19 can result in severe disease, requiring hospitalisation, and may even cause death, especially among older people or who are already suffering from other diseases. However, that does not mean others who are below 60 are immune to it.

A message from WHO
World Health Organization (WHO) director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has warned that young people are not invincible. "You are not invincible, this virus could put you in hospital for weeks or even kill you. Even if you don’t get sick the choices you make about where you go could be the difference between life and death for someone else,” he said.

The Age factor
The percentage of people hospitalised increased with age, from 2 per cent to 3 per cent among people aged less than or nine years, to 31 per cent in 85+ year age group.

The stark reality
A US study has found 38% of the Covid-19 patients who required hospitalisation till March 16 were in the age group of 20 to 54 years. In France, more than 50% of the cases are under 60 years old. Even children can end up with a severe infection, revealed another study published in the journal ‘Paediatrics’.

What should you do
Maintain a healthy lifestyle and regularly wash your hands with soap. In case washing hands is not an option, rub hands with alcohol-based sanitiser. Avoid touching mouth, nose or eyes. Maintaining social distancing is advisable. Wear masks if you are visiting hospitals or where you may have to encounter a crowd. Experts also advise to limit alcohol consumption, and avoid sugary drinks and smoking. “Smoking can increase your risk of developing severe disease if you become infected with Covid-19,” according to WHO.
