Be prepared to pay toll on old highway to Pune too
From Wednesday, passengers taking the old road, NH 4, to Pune will have to pay toll tax for its expansion into a swanky four-lane highway as per the standards stipulated by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).
The expansion and renovation of the 117-km old Mumbai-Pune highway has been completed on build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis for Rs 286.5 crore spent by Mhaiskar Infrastructure under a concession agreement between the Union government and Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). MSRDC minister Anil Deshmukh told journalists on Tuesday that the agreement was signed on August 9, ’04, for a 15-year recovery schedule through toll for the private contractor.
The toll structure has been designed on the basis of distance and number of toll stations a vehicle covers on the road. A car or jeep taking the entire 117-km stretch from Mumbai to Pune would have to shell out the full toll of Rs 65 per trip. For LCV, truck/bus, and multi-axle vehicle, a trip to Pune from Mumbai would cost Rs 115, Rs 229 and Rs 492 respectively. This toll structure would be in force till March 31, ’08, from September 13, ’06, Mr Deshmukh said.
The toll would be revised every three years during the 15-year-long period.
The minister said a 40% concession on toll on the old highway as compared to expressway would reduce the traffic burden on the expressway. “Passengers would be more inclined to use the old Mumbai-Pune highway as the toll is less and the quality standards have been followed as per the guidelines of NHAI,” Mr Deshmukh said.
