BBMP pitches in with Rs 3 crore for Chennai flood relief

BENGALURU: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will donate Rs 3 crore towards flood relief efforts in Chennai, Mayor BN Manjunath Reddy said on Tuesday.

The cash-strapped civic body has pooled in salaries of employees and entitlements of elected corporators to raise the funds. "We have collected Rs 2.5 crore from a day's salary ` of our staff. The rest comes from corporators who have set aside one month's honorarium," the Mayor said.

Karnataka was one of the first states to announce an aid of Rs 5 crore. Chief secretary Kaushik Mukherjee has been asked to arrange 50,000 blankets to be sent to Chennai, law minister TB Jayachandra said. "The Karnataka Milk Federation has been instructed to send Good Life milk and milk powder after ascertaining Tamil Nadu's requirement," the minister said.
