Bangladesh condemns reprinting of prophet cartoon

Bangladesh on Saturday condemned the reprinting in Denmark of a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed, saying it would "only spur resentment" in the Islamic world.

DHAKA: Bangladesh on Saturday condemned the reprinting in Denmark of a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed, saying it would "only spur resentment" in the Islamic world.

"We deeply regret the republication of the Danish cartoons. We condemn it," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

"We fail to understand how hurting the sentiments of a billion Muslims can advance the cause of freedom of expression."

Seventeen Danish dailies printed the drawing on Wednesday, vowing to defend freedom of expression a day after police in Denmark foiled a plot to murder the cartoonist.

Largely Muslim Bangladesh saw violent protests by tens of thousands of angry demonstrators in 2006 after cartoons of the prophet were first published in a Danish daily.
