Bangla influx seen behind Assam population rise

GUWAHATI: The BJP in Assam has questioned the abnormal rise in the number of voters between calender 2004 and 2009. The party said in these five years, the total number of voters in the state had shot up by a shade over 24.28 lakh while the rise in the number of voters was 7.13 lakh between 1999 and 2004.

The BJP���s youth wing, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), feels the Bangladesh influx has triggered such growth in the number of voters.

BJYM president Dilip Saikia said: We want the government to take note of the abnormal growth in voters between 2004 and 2009. BJYM has demanded a thorough checking of voters list that was finalised in 2006.

The wing has submitted a memorandum to the chief election commissioner on Monday. It also said the abnormal rise of over 24 lakh voters and that has posed a serious threat to the demography of the state.
